Grow Your Faith

Online Bible Websites

Anchor 1

If you have recently accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, or you have renewed your commitment to following Jesus, or you want to know Jesus better, you can take the following steps to grow your faith and build a relationship with Him.

Read the Bible Daily

Reading the Bible is important in getting to know God better.  The Bible is God’s accurate revelation of Himself, His plan of redemption through Jesus Christ, and His design for how you can live a joyful and peaceful life even in the midst of your trials and struggles.  Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you God's Spiritual Truth that is found in the Bible with the desire that you will respond to His Truth and allow for transformation in your life. God inspired about 40 different authors to write His Book which is considered helpful for teaching, correcting, and training so that each person can be equipped to do the work of God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)  For us, when we say "Give us our daily bread" as a part of the Lord's Prayer, we think not only of bread for our bodies, but Bread (The Bible) for our soul. Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4

There are several websites where you can access the Bible on your phone, tablet or computer.  If you want to read a complete book of the Bible, we suggest you start with the book of John.  It is a good place to begin to learn about Jesus.

Bible Gateway – website: www.biblegateway.com.  When you access this website, you will see a verse for the day.  You will also see a search bar and Bible Translation menu which offer several different translations to help you decide the translation that you like best.  We like using the English Standard Version or ESV.

Bible Study Tools – website: www.biblestudytools.com.  This website offers a verse of the day, a custom Bible reading plan, and Bible verses by topic among other options to help you read the Bible.

Blue Letter Bible --- website: www.blueletterbible.org.  This website offers a variety of tools to support in-depth Bible study such as commentaries, Greek and Hebrew word tools, concordances, and devotionals.

You Version – website: www.youversion.com.  From the website, you can download the Bible App to your phone. You can read any verse by searching for it.  The App also allows for the Bible verse to be read to you, to have specific verses highlighted, and to offer other helpful study tools.

If you want to buy a Bible and are not sure what translation to buy, we suggest you go to a bookstore that has an assortment of Bibles to choose from, then pick a set of verses, perhaps a story about Jesus’ Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-8), and read it using several translations to see which version of the Bible with which you feel most comfortable.  If you feel comfortable with a certain translation, you are probably more likely to read the Bible daily than if you buy a translation that is difficult for you to read and/or understand.

Pray

A successful prayer is a prayer that is sincerely prayed.  It is not important what words we use to pray, but it is important that we do pray, and that we pray fervently.  Prayer allows for two-way communication with God.  We speak to Him, and He will speak to us.  He longs to hear about our frustrations, joys, fears, dreams and needs.  We can tell Him anything.  There is comfort in knowing that He hears our every prayer.  In addition, we can approach God with a humble heart attitude and with a heart of confidence and expectancy.  We are assured that God does have the power to answer every prayer, but also know that the answers will come only in God's perfect timing and will.  I John 5:14-15 (ESV) reads, "And this is the confidence that we have toward him [Jesus], that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him."

One way to pray to God is to follow the acronym known as

ACTS – Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication.  The characteristics of the ACTS prayer are found in the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus gave us as a way to pray.  Those verses can be found in Matthew 6:9-13.  By having consistent prayer time, we can build the relationship with God that was restored through Jesus' sacrifice. The more we know God, the more we will want to talk with Him. Just as we want to spend time with our friends, we will want to spend time with God in prayer.

Our favorite part of prayer is Adoration.  We are most joyful when we think about who God is.  It is just mind-boggling to think about how great He is!  Quite often our praise for Him can come from a past event, present experience, or even from faith we have in God's future plans for us -- whatever the Holy Spirit brings to our mind. We can see His attributes exhibited through our experiences and/or through the experiences of different characters in the Bible. If you like, you can praise Him for the attributes you find in the devotion.  Psalm 146:10 (ESV) is a good reminder about praise -- "The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord!"

Confession is the 2nd part of the prayer.  We need to confess our sins, so that we can be forgiven and renew our relationship with God.  Furthermore, we know that confession is not only about God forgiving us, but also about allowing God to change us -- to help us to repent or turn away from our sins. John writes in 1 John 1:9 (ESV), "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

The 3rd section is Thankfulness. Do we really know all that Jesus does for us on a daily basis?  Our whole attitude in life changes when we focus on thanking Him for all the little and big things that He does for us.  We feel like cherished sheep in the field for He is our Good Shepherd.  He cares for us and loves us.  We especially like how Paul writes about thankfulness in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV), "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

Finally, we come to Supplication -- making our requests known to God.  He already knows what our needs are, but for our benefit, God asks us to come to Him in prayer.  Our prayers confirm our need to rely on Him.  There are many things to pray for – ourselves, family, friends, those that are in need, the church and its leadership, the leaders of our country, etc.  What a gift it is to know as Paul writes in Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV), "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

What a privilege it is that we can pray to God anytime!

Find a Church

If you have no idea what church to attend, we recommend that you pray to God and ask Him to help you find a church near where you live.  In addition, if you know someone who goes to church, ask if you can attend with them.  That is actually how we found the church that we are currently attending.  Or you can go on the internet and look for churches that are near you.  Again, pray for God to lead you to the church that He wants you to attend.  It is very important to find a church and attend on a regular basis.  By attending a church service, you will have an opportunity to worship God through music.  You will learn about God through the Bible verses that are read weekly during the service and through the message that is given by the preacher.  You will meet and have fellowship with other believers who can encourage you in your walk with the Lord.  In addition, belonging to a church will allow you to participate in different ministry opportunities where you can help others in need, teach Sunday school, help with worship, participate in a Bible study, etc.  It is a place where you can use your gifts to build up the body of Christ – the church. 1 Corinthians 12

Find a Bible Study Class

From our experience, being in a Bible study has helped us to grow in our faith in God.  An organized Bible study class can provide you with the opportunity to study God's Word, participate in group discussion, learn how to apply the verses to your life, read scholarly commentary, and fellowship with class members.  In short, you will have the chance to study, share, listen, read, and fellowship during each Bible study class time.  We recommend the following Bible studies which offer classes to people of all ages worldwide.  To find a class that is offered near where you live, please visit the following websites:
